Boston Steps Up Adoption of Social Media, Topaz Survey Shows

Last month, Topaz co-sponsored the inaugural meeting of the Boston Social Media Club. The November 2 event drew a mix of social media producers, consumers and novices, who came to learn about the technologies and how other companies and individuals are using them.

A survey of the more than 70 attendees at the event revealed a sharp growth in acceptance of blogs, RSS, wikis and podcasts. In fact, a full 100 percent of those polled plan to increase participation in such activities in 2007. Blogs were ranked as the top activity, with 29 percent of respondents indicating they read and/or contribute to blogs regularly. RSS feeds followed with 23 percent, podcasts at 21 percent and wikis at 20 percent. Attendees also reported to average four hours a day engaged in social media.

"These survey results -- and the interest in this SMC event -- is further evidence that Boston ‘gets’ social media," said Todd Van Hoosear, who heads the Topaz buzz media practice. "Earlier this year, businesses and communications professionals were asking why they should consider blogging, but now the question is how and when."

100 Years of Press Releases: Now What?

This year marked the 100th anniversary of the press release, a traditional PR tool that has come under fire recently. The PR community has responded, and if you haven't heard about the social media release before, you will soon. While many in the PR world are beginning to talk about social media releases, Topaz has been an early adopter and is committed to working to make this new approach to news releases a reality. As part of this effort, our agency is a primary supporter of the Social Media Club's "hRelease" format.

Curious about what a social media press release looks like? Check out this recent Topaz social media survey release on the survey mentioned above: http://www.prweb.com/releases/socialmediaclub/boston/prweb476191.htm

While we formatted this press release in a traditional manner, it supports "folksonomies" (e.g., Technorati tags), social bookmarking options (e.g., Digg, del.icio.us), RSS, in-line images and hyperlinks, feedback (comments) and "trackbacks." You can also attach audio, video and do a whole lot more.

Ask the Expert – Awards-Driven PR

There are many facets to successful PR programs. Media relations, award and public speaking opportunities, and online communications are just a few. In this and future newsletters we will offer thoughts from Topazers and other industry experts on best practices for various PR initiatives.

In this issue, Lynn Marcus, president of Marcus + Company, shares tips on using awards as part of a PR program.

Finding Awards Competitions Worth Pursuing
By Lynn Marcus, president of Marcus + Company

Prioritizing the many awards competitions just takes research -making sure competitions you enter have two essential elements:

  • First, find out what is available. Check the leading publications and associations for your market and add their awards competitions to the list. Then add any competitions sponsored by relevant professional organizations.
  • Once you have a list, rank the competitions and establish priorities. Two primary factors in establishing the value of any competition are:
    • Who sponsors it? The best competitions to enter are those sponsored by established publications or organizations that are recognized and respected in your market. If you have never heard of the competition sponsor, that doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t enter the competition. Just do your homework to find out more before deciding if it is worth entering.
    • How rigorous is the judging? Who the judges are and how they select the winners are also important to your decision to enter. Good competitions use judges who are experts in the subject matter they judge. You may not know all the judges, but you should recognize their firms. The competition should also have a specified and well-understood process for selecting winners so it can defend the judges’ selections. Be wary of any competition that does not clearly describe how judges evaluate entries.

Lynne S. Marcus is president of Marcus + Company, a communications firm that specializes in awards and recognition programs. She is editor and publisher of the Marketing with HonorsSM directory, a complete online database of awards competitions. She also created and co-chaired the MITX (formerly MIMC) Awards competition for innovation and technology in New England.
